You want to dry baby clothes without shrinkage. First, while this is possible, it's not always practical. If you have a mission critical item of baby clothing (e.g. an heirloom) that you do not under any circumstances want to shrink, we will explain how. But on the other hand, in the case of everyday baby clothes, you need to be less concerned about shrinkage. If an everyday item shrinks, so be it - your baby is growing fast enough that he or she will grow out of the clothing at some point soon, regardless of whether the item shrank in the dryer.

How to stop baby clothes from shrinking when drying them

The only way to ensure no shrinkage occurs is to wash the baby clothing in cool or cold water (not hot) and dry them on a drying rack such as one of these on Amazon. Needless to say, this is not always practical to do as you can run out of space for the drying rack in your home - or out of space on the rack for the baby clothes. Furthermore, it takes longer to dry on a drying rack than in the tumble dryer.

So this approach is best for heirloom pieces, not everyday baby clothes.

It's the heat that causes shrinkage, which is why you want to ensure a cool or cold wash temperature and line dry on a drying rack. You should avoid a hot wash or the tumble dryer.

Fabrics which shrink easily when exposed to heat

Cotton and wool are the fabrics most prone to shrinkage when exposed to heat.

By contrast, polyester shrinks very little if at all. Therefore, you don't need to line dry polyester baby clothes, you can simply put those through the dryer without worrying about shrinking. Of course, this involves reading the labels carefully, which is also not always practical as a busy parent when you have a load of baby clothes to do.

Your decision for your baby clothes

The key when washing baby clothes and drying, is to decide which items of clothing you are OK with shrinking and which you are not. Items that you are unwilling to accept shrinkage need to be washed on a cold or cool setting and dried on a line or rack.

For reasons of practicality, it's best to aim for shrinkage on most baby clothes except for a select few items. These heirloom items or other special clothing should be cared for as described above so that they don't shrink.

If you need more tips on baby laundry, I also answer the question of how to know whether all baby clothes can be washed together.
