When my oldest was just a newborn, my husband's grandmother gave us a gorgeous smocked outfit in 3 month size that was suitable for formal photos. This was the perfect gift! At age 3 months, I took my baby to the local photography place to get formal photos of him in the outfit, which I'm grateful to this day that I did.
But what if you are still looking for a formal outfit for baby? Perhaps you are starting to think about baby photos for your own newborn in a couple of months time. Or maybe you are a relative like my husband's wonderful grandmother, looking to give a formal outfit as a gift. Either way it can seem overwhelming to know where to start because the standard everyday children's clothing stores don't tend to stock formal outfits that you might be seeking for photos. But don't worry! I have you covered.
As an added bonus, formal outfits also work well for occasions such as Easter or birthdays, even if you're not having professional photographs done at any of those occasions.
Here are the best places for baby outfits for pictures. You can't get these anywhere else!

Smockingbird Kids, as its name suggests, is a line of handmade children's clothing featuring beautiful details such as smocking, applique, and more. Also, some items are monogrammable. The brand was started by two moms who wanted to create high quality clothes without a correspondingly massive price tag. The items are very reasonably priced considering they are handmade and look amazing.
As you can see from the image below, their clothing is perfect for baby photos! Besides this style, they have plenty more styles that are ideal for formal photos.
Etsy.com is a wonderful way to get a handmade item for your child, and there you can find plenty of sellers of beautiful traditional baby clothes suitable for formal photos.
For baby boys, I was thrilled with the choice and quality available. Depending on what level of dressiness you want, I recommend this adorable baby boy bow tie and vest outfit by Averylee Baby, or for something more formal go for this superb gray linen baby boy tuxedo outfit with shirt, bow tie, and suspenders. If both of those are too formal for you, then you'll want the semi-formal baby boy linen outfit.
For girls, cotton and other traditional materials were a little harder to find - but well worth the time looking! There was no difficulty finding outfits with plenty of tulle, but if you're looking for cotton and traditional styles on Etsy, I recommend this soft blue striped hand smocked dress with frilly sleeves - actually the seller Phlona's Etsy store has many other great traditionally styled baby girl designs too, and best of all they're quite affordable. For those who want a different material and style, I also liked this baby girl satin dress with detachable pearl sash by AmericanStride.
