It's well worth being prepared. Your teenage son may suddenly need to have a suit for an event such as: prom, a scholarship interview, dance classes, a debate tournament, or some other formal event.

Teen suits can be a little tricky to find because, while your teen is likely in a men's size, he hasn't probably filled out quite as much as an adult man has, so the fit is harder to get right. Don't worry, there are several U.S. stores that work out well for suits for teenage guys.

Please note, if your boy is younger than a teen or if you're not looking for a suit but rather a blazer and dress pants, then you'll prefer my other article on where to find boys formal wear.

Moving back to the original topic of suits for teen boys, here is where to shop online or in person if you're in the U.S.

Suits for teen boys

The 3 places I recommend when it comes to teen suits, starting with the best, are: Men's Wearhouse, Macy's - and if price is a major concern, then Amazon (but please note that quality can be hit-or-miss at Amazon).

Men's Wearhouse

The reason Men's Wearhouse is at the top of the list is that they specialize in menswear. Their online store allows you to apply filters, and one of the filters is slim fit - this is very helpful for most teen boys who haven't quite yet filled out compared to a man's frame. You typically buy coordinated separates there: the suit pants and suit jacket to ensure you get the best fit. They make it clear which pants goes with which jacket, so you won't have any problems.

Although you can shop online, if there's a Men's Wearhouse store in your area, it can be worthwhile to go in person to try on items and have the store assistant help with getting the best fit. This helps a lot when looking for prom suits for teenagers.

Macy's

Macy's is another great option for teen boys suits. I love that they have filters for styles whose appearance and fit suits young men. The filters I'm thinking of are modern fit suits and skinny fit suits, so take a look.

There can be a huge range in prices at Macy's from cheap to ultra-expensive, but the site allows you to sort by price.

Like Men's Wearhouse, at Macy's you're typically buying separate suit pants and jackets that are designed to work together. I have noticed one or two suit sets there where the pants and jacket are bought together, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

Amazon

Amazon is a good bet if you need a "for now" suit that doesn't need scrutiny at a close distance. This is because the quality at Amazon can be hit-or-miss depending on the brand. If your child will be in an orchestra concert and is not expected to be seen close up, then it may make sense to buy the suit for Amazon because you can get it for so much cheaper there. Or you may opt for a local upscale men's consignment store, borrowing one from a relative with a similar build, or renting a suit at a formal wear rental place. But if you buy one, you have the advantage of being easily able to wear it again if any other formal situation comes up.

With Amazon you're typically shopping for a suit set not separates, so you're able to buy the jacket and pants together, and pricing is very affordable.

A positive about shopping at Amazon is the variety of men's suits available in different colors and styles - and many of them are slim fit suits for a teenager. To successfully shop for a suit for your teen boy at Amazon:

  1. Pay careful attention to the sizing on the product description. All reputable brands of suit on Amazon will give measurements for what sizing they fit.
  2. Don't rely too much on the product images as a guide for quality. Instead, look at the customer reviews to find photos of real people actually wearing the suit. This will give you a much better idea what the suit will really look like quality-wise.
  3. Customer reviews can also help you further with sizing, because many of them will say in the review what size they ordered and what their height and weight is, and how it fit.

If you shop wisely, Amazon can still work well if you're on a tight budget.

To sum up so far, the best places for suits for teen boys are Men's Wearhouse, Macy's and Amazon.

Now that you know where to get the suit, you may also need dress shoes and a few other essential accessories, so read on for those.

Dress shoes for a teen boy

The best all-around place for formal shoes for a teen boy is shopping the men's dress shoes at Kenneth Cole. No, it's not anywhere as expensive as you might think! And the shoes are great quality so you can't go wrong. Alternatively if you want more of a range of styles and if price is an issue, DSW stocks men's dress shoes too.

Dress socks for teen guys

It's surprisingly easy to forget about dress socks when shopping for a suit! Many teen boys wear athletic shoes with white socks day to day - they might have already misplaced any dress socks they already had.

I recommend the men's dress socks at Amazon.com. Be sure to get a dress sock that goes high enough, about mid-calf. Many socks on Amazon are labeled dress socks but in fact are ankle socks or loafer socks and don't go high enough, but you'll be able to find the right thing at a glance.

Shirts for a teen boy

For a teen boy who isn't yet man-sized, get a size small men's dress shirt or neck size 14 - 14.5 inch.

While you can get these almost anywhere that sells men's clothes, I recommend Belk, Marshalls or TJ Maxx. The reason for this is that you get the most bang for your buck there. Those stores operate on the clearance model where they sell excess inventory from fancy brands and pass the savings onto you. So you can get a top quality brand name shirt there for your teen - at bargain basement pricing.

Tie suitable for teenagers

I recommend getting a men's tie for your teen boy at Belk.com. They always have an excellent range of these in stock from great brands at low low prices. Alternatively you can get ties at Men's Wearhouse, but prices for accessories tend to be more expensive there.

Formal belt for a teen boy

The belt color should match the dress shoes. I recommend buying a men's dress belt from Amazon.com. Get the standard formal style with a belt buckle, not a ratchet-style or slide-through belt which are more casual.

If you're buying the belt before the shoes, you can get a reversible style of formal belt which is black on one side and brown on the other. That said, the belt buckle on reversible belts tends to be a bit heavier and less comfortable than on a non-reversible belt since it has to be engineered differently to look the same but still work on both sides. If your teen boy is quite slim or small, the buckle on a reversible belt may feel heavier than is comfortable.

Only get a reversible belt if you don't yet know your shoe color. Otherwise simply get a men's formal dress belt which matches the shoe color.

Read the product description carefully to ensure you get the correct size of belt - you'll need to measure your teen boy's waist size for this. There will be sizing information on the product page to show what waist measurement corresponds to which belt size.
