Can all baby clothes be washed together? Answered!

Don't worry, baby laundry is pretty easy. Which is good, because as the parent of a baby you'll be busy enough that you'll need some things to be easy! If you're wondering whether all baby clothes can be washed together, the answer is yes, with only a few exceptions which are explained here.

And no, you don't need to separate lights and darks with baby clothes! (Unless the item is one of the exceptions below). It would be way too much work to do that anyway, especially while caring for a baby. Even if you have a pristine white onesie for baby, it won't stay that way for long - there'll be subtle stains from spit-up, general wear and tear, etc, that you can't easily get out anyway, even if you separated lights and darks.

Your baby might need more outfits than you think - unless you want to be doing laundry daily. If you still need a few more items without breaking the bank, here's my tips for how to get the best value for money from baby clothes.

Specific items of baby clothes which do need to be washed separately

As mentioned above, there are exceptions where some items of baby clothes need to be laundered separately. These are:

  • Heirloom items, anything delicate for example with lace - do NOT dryclean. Read here why you should never dryclean baby clothes. If you have a delicate item, either handwash it or wash it in a small load of delicates.
  • Soiled clothing - pre-wash soiled clothing before doing a regular wash. I'm talking here if there's poop or significant amounts of spit-up on it. You don't need to do this for every tiny food stain - a standard bit of formula spillage isn't going to pose any problems. For the prewash, depending on how bad it is, this could be anything from soaking it in a bucket with a little bit of gentle soap, to doing a light wash cycle in the washing machine first.

Whether you can wash baby clothes with adult clothes

In theory, yes you can wash baby clothes with adult clothes, so long as you use a gentle detergent for the whole load. In other words, wash the load as if it was all baby clothes. Standard adult laundry detergents have strong fragrances that can be bad for baby's delicate skin. You can read my tips for washing baby clothes and cheaper alternatives to Dreft here.

However, in practice you probably don't want to wash baby clothes with adult clothes unless you really need to - for example if parents and baby are both running out of clean clothes with no time to do 2 loads. The reason for this is the size difference between the clothing making it likely for baby clothes to get lost. For example, a tiny sock can wind up clinging to the inside of adult jeans and you may never discover it for a long time (maybe not even after you put the jeans on!)

Conclusion

Yes, baby clothes can all be washed together with a few exceptions outlined above. There is no need to separate baby clothes by color! If you have to, you can wash baby clothes with adults so long as the entire load is washed with a gentle detergent. In practice the size differences between baby clothes and adult clothing make it too easy for small baby items to get stuck to adult clothing and lost.
