wrapped gift on table - unusual and cool gifts for kids

If you want your gift to stand out, then read on! Here I've compiled a list of cool and unique gifts for kids. These gifts are off the beaten path and are things you may not have heard of before. This list covers a range of budgets from cheap to pricey, and also a range of children's ages. So you're certain to find something that is the right fit for your situation.

A play fort with panels the kids can rearrange as they wish

In this image above from HearthSong you can see an example of how this fort looks and the way it has been put together by the kids. It's the perfect gift for indoor play in any weather, plus it encourages creativity and co-operation without involving any screen time. Besides the winter-themed fort shown above, you can check out HearthSong's full collection of forts here.

This is definitely a great choice of gift for kids who have everything!

Personalized children's items

Something beautiful with the child's name on it is always going to go over well as a unique and special gift. My top recommendation for where to get a personalized gift for a child is Etsy.com, and that's because most of the items there are handmade by artisans. This means you can get something truly awesome and unique that you won't find anywhere else.

There's something for every budget

I love that you can spend as little or as much as you want at Etsy - there's something for every budget here, and for every age of child. To start, take a look at all personalized children's gifts on Etsy.com.

STEAM project subscription crate

If the child is into any of the STEAM topics (science, technology, engineering, art and math) then a subscription crate from KiwiCo is an exciting choice for this child. There are different crates for all ages and interests, and you can take a look at topics and pricing here.

If that's a little pricey for you, don't worry, we have some cheaper STEM gifts further down the page - remember, there's something for every budget here!

Artwork for their room

Artwork is the kids gift for kids who have everything. Boys especially tend to have few if any pieces of art as room decor, so art would be a welcome addition. An exciting art print that is kid-oriented can improve not just the decor but also the child's overall mood and happiness. For this type of gift I recommend Imagekind because they are reliable and reputable. And unlike many other online art stores, Imagekind has a selection of fine art prints especially suited for a child's bedroom.

Snacks from around the world

Take a food journey around the world

Have the child experience literally experience a taste of other cultures through snack subscription box service Try The World. It's something that others won't think of easily, making it a unique kids gift. As with many subscription services, the pricing gets cheaper per box with longer subscription periods. Even so, I found it was a little pricey for what it was. If you're looking for an excuse to splurge though, this is a good choice. You should be aware before buying that the boxes are not themed per country, it's just a selection of snacks from around the world from a mix of countries that get delivered to the child's home.

Money-saving tip

If you wanted to do something like this on your own as a one-off instead of a subscription, you could save a lot of money by going to your local specialty grocery store and shopping a selection of kid-friendly international snacks. Then simply wrap it up as a nice gift basket and voila! - you have a great gift for a child that will go over well and isn't all candy either!

Affordable STEM gifts

If you're looking for something affordable that's not a subscription crate, but involves STEM or just plain fun, you'll love Fat Brain Toys.

Even if the brand itself is not new to you, they are continually getting new toys in.

High quality enriching toys are available there for all ages at an affordable price point. Even if the brand itself is not new to you, they are continually getting new toys in, so you may like to look at their recent arrivals for a new and exciting toy that others may not know about yet.

If you don't know the child well, another good reason to shop at Fat Brain Toys is that you can opt to shop by age, where they take the guesswork out of it for you.

I've shopped there for my children's toys and I've always had a good experience - the toys are high quality, you get great value for money, and shipping is reliable.

Hand-painted art of the child's pet

If the child has a pet, then what could be a better gift than hand-painted wall art of the treasured pet? For this, I recommend Paint Your Life. There, a real artist will hand paint a picture of the pet based on a photo that you send them. You get to pick the artist yourself - Paint Your Life has many artists with different styles, and you can see their portfolios on the site so you can get a feel for the look.

Paint Your Life does pets, but they also do paintings of people - in fact, that's what most people use it for, so another great option is a picture of the child. You can even do the child together with the pet if you like, although that is a little more costly because the more people or pets in the painting, the higher the price. In either situation, you would need to supply a photo of the pet and/or child.

Personalized book

There are several options for personalized books with the child as the star of the book. Of these, I recommend Wonderbly because it has a range of books and storylines specifically geared toward different ages, and they deliver worldwide. The other reason I like it is that some of the storylines allow other options beyond just the name. For example in the book The Wondrous Road Ahead, you get to pick 3 personal values out of a shortlist, where each of these then becomes a chapter in your child's personalized story.

Some of the books allow for more than one child to feature in the personalization, for example the title That's MY Cake lets you include 2, 3, or 4 children's names to make a gift that siblings can share together.

The bottom line

Any of the above options are a great choice when you're looking for unusual and cool gifts for kids. There is something for every budget and every age here, so you're certain to find something that will suit the child you're buying for.
